I was a volunteer and staff member with Scripture Union for over 36 years starting as a teenager on Queenscliff CSSM when I was 17. That experience changed my life and my life’s direction. I have shared Jesus with thousands of children and families since having taken part in over 38 SU missions and camps, directing 23 of these. I have been a Children & Families Pastor in large and small churches and have loved the privilege of seeing many children and adults respond to Jesus and express their faith and trust in Him.

[expand title=”Version 7 … Worshipping with Children in our MIDST focus (287 words)” tag=”strong” rel=”submenu-highlander”]

Phillip Day was a volunteer or a staff member with Scripture Union for over 30 years and enjoyed a similar role with the Victorian Council of Christian Education (VCCE) for 3 years. He has also been a Children’s & Family pastor in large and small churches and has played a variety of leadership roles in mission & holiday programs, helping children and their families to follow Jesus. Married to Keren, they have two children Tess (21) and Georgia (19). Phillip enjoys exploring new ways to incorporate the visual and performing arts in communicating God’s Good News as part of corporate worship and other learning experiences.

Four of his top ideas when it comes to worshipping with children include:

[ol style=”13″]
[li] Gather children to your laps for cuddles & participation for the BIG 4 Worship activities …music/singing/dancing … Bible readings … prayer … communion. Provide quiet, supportive resources for your child around these activities.[/li]
[li]Creche & Foyer: Use For Recovery Only! … make sure all the quiet, interesting, yummy, fun, colourful things are in the worship area with the family of God.[/li]
[li]The ‘Mosh Pit’ of Worship … make sure your families with children sit with a clear view of the action. This will surround children with the culture you would love them to absorb in order for them to learn and grow into worship.[/li]
[li]Don’t do it for parents! … encourage parents in their responsibilities of parenting and help them with the ideas, teaching and resources they need to be great parents and the spiritual leaders they can be for their own children. Train parents in a diverse range of topics from discipline in the home to understanding the faith journey of children; from active listening to their children to helping their children to respond to God.[/li]

Quotes about Phil

[blockQuote position=”center”]Creative, inspiring, diverse, lateral, inclusive and interactive. He is able to articulate in words what we have felt and known for years but have been struggling to express and put into action.[/blockQuote]
[blockQuote position=”center”]Phil’s understanding of children in the community of faith is something he has obviously given a great deal of time and research to. We’ve learnt how valuable it is to learn and worship and grow WITH children. In terms of looking at the church, we have reversed the culture away from individual and ‘nuclear’ family towards being a faith community! People look at us and say “We want that!”[/blockQuote]
